According to the Winter 2011 Edition of Cure Magazine, a recent clinical study proved that 2 grams of ground ginger root–taken daily–reduced inflammation in the subjects bodies by 28%.
Much of the anti-inflammatory benefit was in the intestines, leading researchers to believe that ginger may help prevent colon cancer.
Dr. Suzanna Zick is quoted as saying “Interest in this is only going to increase as people look for ways to prevent cancer that are non-toxic and improve their quality of life in a cost-effective way.”
She cautions that there isn’t enough science to recommend large amounts of ginger root be ingested yet. But apparently, the results of this Phase 2 trial look promising enough to warrant future study.
My take on all of this: Taking ginger to help settle your stomach may also help reduce overall inflammation in the body. Maybe take a gram or so (with your doctor’s approval, of course) a day might be a good place to start for those of us with stiff fingers and bad knees.. Couldn’t hurt–and ginger isn’t very expensive.
I priced ginger root capsules at Walmart and a bottle cost less than $6. The capsules are 500 mg. I’m going to start by taking two capsules in the am and two at night. That easily takes me up to 2 grams daily. Worth a try!
