EverydayHealth.com ran an article earlier this week about proton therapy–a new type of radiation therapy. I wanted to share it with you here today:
Advances in Cancer Treatment: The Facts About Proton Therapy
Many factors can influence your selection of a cancer treatment plan: the type of cancer, how common it is, and what the “gold standard” treatment is. That’s why it’s important to be in-the-know about advances in care, such as proton therapy, a new type of radiation treatment.
What Is Proton Therapy?
Proton therapy is an advanced type of radiation treatment that uses beams of protons to deliver radiation directly to the tumor, destroying cancer cells while leaving surrounding tissue virtually untouched.
What Are the Benefits of Proton Therapy?
Protons enter the body with a low radiation dose, stop at the tumor, match its shape and volume or depth, and deposit the bulk of their cancer-fighting energy right into the tumor. Because the technology is so precise, it results in:
A greater radiation dose directly to the tumor
Minimal impact to normal tissues
Fewer side effects
A reduced chance of late effects, such as secondary cancer
I did speak with a radiation oncologist about proton therapy last week while I was in Scranton, Pennsylvania speaking to a cancer support group. It sounds promising. But I must admit I don’t know much about it. Radiation therapy has become less popular in recent years. Maybe this will help it make a comeback.
Feel good and keep smiling! Pat
