Watercress may fight breast cancer
By Jimmy Downs

A new study led by researchers at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom suggests that a compound found in watercress may help fight breast cancer.

The study published in the British Journal of Nutrition and Biochemical Pharmacology showed phenylethyl isothiocyanate may have the ability to suppress breast cancer cell development by intercepting the signal in the body and starving the growing breast cancer of blood and oxygen.

For the study, Professor Graham Packham and colleagues assigned a small group of breast cancer survivors 80 grams of watercress a day after a period of fasting and tested their blood samples 24 hours of taking the vegetable.

The researchers found the function of a protein called Hypoxia Inducible Factor was measurably affected in the blood cells of the breast cancer survivors whose blood was found to have significant levels of the plant compound.

More work is needed to confirm that eating watercress can actually stop the growth of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is expected to be diagnosed in 175,000 people and the disease is expected to kill about 50,000 breast cancer patients in the United States in 2010, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Feel good, keep smiling and eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables! Pat
